Although warts are rarely harmful, they are unpleasant, sometimes unappealing, and infectious. They can also be terribly uncomfortable. It shouldn’t come as a shock to know that Warts can get treated at home or by a qualified doctor.
What are Warts?
Human papillomavirus, or HPV, causes warts, which are skin growths. These benign noncancerous growths are caused by infections in the upper layer of the skin.
Warts are usually skin-colored and harsh to the touch. Although they can also be smooth and uniform, a dark brown or gray-black appearance are rare occasions. They can have black seed-like specks on them.
Causes Of Warts:
HPV promotes the rapid and uncontrolled growth of keratin. It is a hard protein found on the skin’s upper layer. As a result, warts appear.
Warts are caused by numerous HPV strains. Close skin-to-skin interaction and contact with HPV-infected things can both transmit these strains. The virus can spread to different places of the body by using the following methods:
- a wart is scratched or bitten
- finger licking or sucking
- Biting your nails with warts all around them
- shaving the legs or the face
Infection is more likely to happen when the skin is wet or injured, such as from a cut or scrape.
Is It Contagious?
Yes, sadly. Warts can get contracted by touching a wart on another person’s body or by coming into contact with items that have been in contact with somebody’s warts, such as blankets or bathmats.
Types of Warts:
1. Common warts: (verruca vulgaris)
Common warts usually grow on your fingers and toes but can appear elsewhere. They have a rough, grainy appearance and a rounded top. Common warts are grayer than the surrounding skin.
2. Plantar warts:
Plantar warts grow on the soles of the feet. Unlike other warts, plantar warts grow into your skin, not out of it. You can tell if you have a plantar wart if you notice what appears to be a small hole in the bottom of your foot that is surrounded by hardened skin. Plantar warts can make walking uncomfortable.
3. Flat warts/ plane warts: (verruca plana)
Flat warts usually grow on the face, thighs, or arms. They are small and not immediately noticeable. Flat warts have a flat top as if they’ve been scrapped. They can be pink, brownish, or slightly yellow.
4. Filiform warts: (verruca filiformis)
Filiform warts grow around your mouth or nose and sometimes on your neck or under your chin. They are small and shaped like a tiny flap or tag of skin. Filiform warts are the same color as your skin.
5. Periungual warts/ mosaic warts:
Periungual warts grow under and around the toenails and fingernails. They can be painful and affect nail growth.
6. Genital warts:
There are a few strains of HPV that cause warts on, in, and around your genitals. In women, these warts — are called “genital warts”. Genital warts are a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by certain low-risk strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). These are different from the high-risk strains that can lead to cervical dysplasia and cancer. HPV infection is especially dangerous for women because some types of HPV can also cause cancer of the cervix and vulva.
Genital warts are usually caused by strains of HPV that differ from the strains that cause warts on your hands or other parts of the body. A wart can’t spread from someone’s hand to the genitals, and vice versa.
